Taiwan, Prosperous Island (2024) began more than a century ago when my great-grandfather was born in colonial Taiwan under Japanese rule. In the film, the fragmented archives of my great-grandfather serve as markers of Taiwan's colonial history, spanning from the extraction of cane sugar to the Allied air raids. Memories of my hometown, Taichung, are woven together with still shots of an abandoned apartment in the city, evoking the passage of time in both Taiwanese history and my great-grandfather's life.
